Athletes from the Illawarra Academy of Sport are gearing up for competition against some of the best regional teams in NSW, when they host the 2014 ClubsNSW Academy Games this weekend.
The ClubsNSW Academy Games will be held on April 12 and 13, with around 700 competitors vying for honours in seven sports including cycling, golf, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby union and triathlon.
The Games get under way with an opening ceremony at the University of Wollongong on the evening of Friday, April 11, followed by competition at venues across Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, the Shoalhaven and the Southern Highlands.
The ClubsNSW Academy Games have been staged each year since 2005, to showcase the talents of athletes from the Regional Academies of Sport program.
Regional Academies of Sport provide young athletes with expert training and education to help them reach elite level. Many of Australia's sporting champions have gone through an academy program.
The Illawarra Academy is hosting the ClubsNSW Academy Games for the third consecutive year.
"Many of Australia's future sports stars on the national and world stage will be here competing at the Games and we're looking forward to a great weekend of competition," said the acting general manager of the lllawarra Academy, Shannon Fraser.
