Warilla man faces court over grooming of teenage girl

A Warilla man has fronted Albion Park Local Court over child grooming allegations.

Jason Mercieca is accused of contacting a 15-year-old girl online and sending her explicit images.

The 31-year-old appeared in court on Wednesday, charged with one count of grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity.

He did not enter a plea.

In March last year, detectives from Rosehill Local Area Command started investigating the grooming allegations.

Police claim Mercieca contacted the teen via a social networking site and began chatting to her on it.

During the online conversations, Mercieca allegedly sent the girl inappropriate images and then asked her to send him similar pictures.

On March 14 this year, police from Rosehill and Lake Illawarra searched a home in Albion Park and seized a laptop computer, mobile phone and clothing.

Mercieca was arrested in Kiama a short time later and charged.

He was granted strict conditional bail to front court this week.

On Wednesday, Magistrate Mary Ryan ordered a brief of evidence in the matter be served by May 21.

Mercieca is set to reappear in court on June 4.
