It is the latest event from The Farmer And The Owl, a joint project by Music Farmers and Yours & Owls. To be held in MacCabe Park off Keira Street, Melbourne band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard will headline a bill featuring The Walking Who, Miners and Day Ravies.
"We wanted to try something new," said Ben Tillman of Yours & Owls. After the successful Farmer and The Owl festival at UOW in 2013, Mr Tillman said the team wanted to explore new venues.
"It's something different for Wollongong. We've got bands, video projections, food - it's turned into a mini-festival."
Originally planned for the Arts Precinct, Mr Tillman said they moved location to avoid any potential noise complaints.
Wollongong City Council's new draft Cultural Plan advocates using non-conventional public performance spaces, with a bulk load of development applications for venues such as Wollongong Botanic Garden, Stuart Park and the Arts Precinct set to make using those spaces easier for event organisers. Mr Tillman said council's efforts had not gone unnoticed.
"They are getting more supportive. We've been plugging away for a while, and they are taking notice," he said. "We're showing we're trying to do something good, and not just kids causing trouble."
The concert starts at 4pm, at 279 Keira Street. Tickets from yoursandowls.com.au.
