Passing Through is the latest work from filmmaker and bodyboarding enthusiast James Kates. Also a member of celebrated Austinmer indie band Shining Bird, Mr Kates called in a few favours to give the film a unique touch.

"Usually I'd email musicians and ask to use their music in the film, but since I know so many talented musicians, I wanted to get them together to score the movie," he said.

Members of Wollongong acts The Walking Who, The Pinheads and Shining Bird, as well as Sydney bands Ernest Ellis and You Beauty and former Wollongong act Ohana, met at Austinmer Scout Hall to slowly collaborate on a series of original recordings titled Coconut Blood to soundtrack the film.

Shot around the world in Brazil, Tahiti, Portugal, Java and New Zealand, Mr Kates said the film took on a whole new layer with the unique soundtrack.

"I'm inspired by the people around me. There's definitely something going on in the music scene here," he said.

Shining Bird bandmate Russell Webster, took on recording and mixing duties for the fortnight-long recording period.

He highlighted the spontaneity of the sessions, with collaborations occurring between whichever musicians were available each day.

"It was about getting people in a room and seeing what came out," Mr Webster said.

"We wanted to get musicians pooling their resources and responding to the film footage."

Passing Through will premiere at Sydney's Oxford Art Factory on April 30, with a live recreation of the soundtrack to be performed after the screening. The film will then be shown at Wollongong Art Gallery on May 3, and tour around the country.
