But in the face of tragedy, humanity has displayed its resilience.
The Shellharbour Mainteck Ocean Swim was a great success last weekend, with 150 participants braving the showery conditions and murky waters to make the 1.2-kilometre dash.
Given the circumstances, the turnout was astounding.
We are all aware of the risk we take in sharing the ocean with sharks.
I had signed up only minutes before Mum called to inform me of the attack.
It seemed I was not alone in my hesitation.
Many participants only registered on the morning of the race, yet in the end there were only 10 competitors fewer than there were last year.
We did not point the finger of blame, and retaliate with renewed vows to cull sharks.
Instead, we joined hands as a community to show our support, and to actively pay tribute to a woman who would have surely been leading the race in pursuit of her passions.
