The Illawarra Seniors representative side will need to improve significantly at next month's State Senior Championships following two losses in their Interzone series at Engadine Bowling Club on Sunday.
Illawarra beat Central Sydney-based Zone 11, 50-48 in their opening match, but then lost 53-44 to Sydney South (Zone 13) and were beaten 55-37 by Zone 12 (Sydney South West) in the final match.
"We only played in patches," Illawarra Zone 16 chairman of selectors Charlie Cheetham admitted. "Overall it was very disappointing and we'll have to improve a fair bit at the state titles."
Cheetham said Towradgi Park Brian Harriott's rink was Illawarra's best, winning 13-12 and 15-12, with their only loss in the opening match to Zone 11 by a shot.
John Cahill's rink also played well, winning two of their three matches, with their loss also by a single shot.
Illawarra split the rinks 2-2 in the win over Zone 11, but won just the one rink from four against Zones 12 and 13.
Meanwhile, several new players have been brought into the Illawarra over 60s squad for the State Senior Championships at Lake Conjola and Ulladulla bowling clubs on May 20-22.
The championships will feature the top over 60s rep teams from the 16 zones across NSW, with Corrimal's Robbie Fahey rewarded for a solid season and selected to play lead for skip John Ferguson.
John Cahill was part of the team that won the State Senior title in 2011 and returns to play second for Ferguson.
