That is the mindset of Rachel Wotherspoon - rather than cutting her teeth on local pageants, the Southern Highlands teenager will compete in the Miss World Australia competition as her first foray into the world of pageantry.
"I'm always interested in trying new things, and this caught my eye and I wanted to give it a try," the Wollongong-born teen said.
Ms Wotherspoon entered on a whim, but is through to the second round. The competition raises funds for Variety Cycle, a charity which benefits children with cystic fibrosis, a condition Ms Wotherspoon herself has.
She has organised a fund-raising dinner at the Lagoon restaurant on May 2, and is looking to raise over $1000.
"The charity raises money for equipment and medical supplies and sports and education programs for children with cystic fibrosis," Ms Wotherspoon said.
"It's close to my heart because those kids are in the same position I was in as a child. I saw them do a lot of work when I was in hospital, so it's great to be able to help them out."
Ms Wotherspoon is also organising a family fun day in Cronulla with some Sydney-based Miss World entrants. The next stage of the competition involves interviews with the Miss World Australia board of directors on May 3, but she is focusing her energies on the Lagoon dinner the night before. Tickets are $60 and include a three-course meal. See facebook.com/events/258169877688866
