The fall from grace by former NSW premier Barry O’Farrell will no doubt give rise to numerous puns, none more certain than the Latin phrase in vino veritas which translates to, “In wine there is the truth”.

Barry O’Farrell failing to formally acknowledge upon receiving as a gift from a Liberal Party fund-raiser and lobbyist, Nick Di Girolamo, a $3000 bottle of 1959 vintage Penfolds Grange Hermitage wine and denying it before ICAC, proved that wine can deliver truth, as distasteful as it was for Mr O’Farrell.
Yet the truth failed to deter the fulsome praise of Mr O’Farrell espoused by his political colleagues and members of the establishment. If there were any positives from last week it came from John Robertson, who avoided taking the advantage available to blackguard Barry O’Farrell.
Instead, John Robertson provided a measured and constructive response, inviting the new Premier to work co-operatively on creating policies preventing lobbyists continuing to exert influence over government.
Hopefully for the people of NSW, political agendas and ideologies will be put aside resulting in that goal being achieved.
