Every year on Anzac Day, Vince Quinn puts on his father’s medals and plays two-up.
Earned in New Guinea and Palestine, the medals give Mr Quinn a tremendous sense of pride while he plays.
‘‘It’s one of those things,’’ he said. ‘‘Every year they have to be worn. The secret to two-up is having a good time – it’s the fairest game there is.’’
For Mount Keira resident Josh Harrison, the secret to a good two-up spin was ‘‘faith in the coins’’.
‘‘My grandad served in the navy so ever since I was 18, I’ve been playing two-up,’’ Mr Harrison said.
‘‘A couple of games of two-up and a few drinks makes for a good day.’’
While numbers were slightly down on previous years, the two-up ring at Illawarra Leagues Club attracted an enthusiastic crowd. Club president Graham Prince said it was important to keep the tradition alive.
‘‘We’re a very traditional club,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a bit quiet today because of the rainy weather, usually the crowd is four people deep.’’
Mr Prince said the secret to a good two-up spin was ‘‘all in the wrist’’.
‘‘You’ve got to twist your wrist and spin the pennies,’’ he said.
