■ The first two heats of the UOW band comp have been completed, with Basil's Kite and Chuparosa already through to the final on August 21. Heavyset Dub and Lucha Libre were named runners-up in their respective heats, meaning they go into the repechage round on August 12 to win a spot in the final. Next week We Came For Dinosaurs, Rivet City, Sentient, The Dirty Reeds and Pleasy To Ease will fight for the third spot in the final. Heats run each Tuesday from 7.30pm at the Unibar; entry is free.
■ Cater 2 U, the regular r'n'b tribute night hosted by Zephyr Magazine, will return next week with a big night showing love for Ja Rule and Ashanti. May 16 is the day, Harp Hotel is the place, for all you '90s urban lovers to get out and help fund Zephyr's new issue.
■ Jenny Broke The Window will support rockers Kingswood at their show at Sydney's Hi-Fi on May 30. The pop-rockers will also play the F/O label launch at Unibar on May 29, in what will be their first local show in a long time.
■ American metalcore band Twitching Tongues are in the country, and will play a big show for all the local punk fans at Corrimal Hotel next week. Joined by Canberra outfit I Exist, as well as Legions, Oppressor and Coercion, the show is set to leave ears ringing and bodies bruised. Corrimal Hotel has been flying the flag for local punk in recent times, and this is one of the biggest shows to roll through in some time. Tickets still available.
■ Rock For Rob Z is a tribute concert for Rob Zessin, who died in a car crash last year. Rob's friends and family have organised some of his favourite bands including Kaleidoscope, Chainsaw Mascara and Soiled Earth, as well as Gold Coast band Helm and Melbourne outfit Sydonia, to play Waves nightclub on May 16.
■ Parkside's next party at Hotel Illawarra will be headlined by Melbourne duo Client Liaison on May 18. Keep an eye out for a Good Life interview with the Parkside boys, coming up soon.
