Ross Alexander Doherty was chased down by concerned onlookers after he allegedly attacked a woman in front of her 14-year-old daughter, as they walked towards the Wollongong CBD.
According to police it was the second crime committed by Doherty that evening, after he threatened a pizza delivery boy outside a Corrimal Street address by telling him: "I have a gun so you better give me your money."
Doherty appeared in Wollongong Local Court on Monday charged with assault, attempted robbery and drug possession charges.
The court heard a 50-year-old woman, who was visiting Wollongong for the weekend, was walking with her daughter along Corrimal Street after 9.30pm when Doherty allegedly slapped her on the top of her head and called her a "slut" as he walked past.
According to police facts he then grabbed the woman by the shoulder and told her to give him money, before pushing the woman onto the roadway and attempting to chase the 14-year-old down the road. He allegedly returned to the woman and pulled her from the roadway, causing scratches to her face and neck, the facts said.
Police allege Doherty then fled the scene after a short scuffle with the woman, whose screams alerted nearby residents.
He was detained by a group of men until police arrived.
The court heard Doherty appeared to be intoxicated by alcohol and drugs at the time of his arrest.
Police later discovered a 1.6-gram bag of cannabis hidden on his body.
Magistrate Michael Stoddart refused Doherty bail to reappear on June 25.
