Charles Justin is an architect who has previously worked with artists putting work into run-down buildings scheduled for redevelopment. He’s also, with his wife Leah, an art collector with a penchant for works that, as you might expect of an architect, delve into geometries, minimalism and urban space. Perceptions of Space: Justin Collection opens on Thursday at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery and features works by Australian and international artists including Stephen Bram, Daniel Crooks and Jiang Pengyi. Curator Diane Soumilas says the Justins want to make their private collection available to the wider public; as such, Charles will be part of a forum on collecting being held on Thursday, May 29. Before that, on Sunday,  May 25, ARM Architecture’s Ian McDougall and David Jamieson, a professor of physics at the University of Melbourne, will join a panel looking at the exhibition’s themes of architecture and spatiality.

RIDING THE RAILS

''It's occurred to me that 25 is the oldest you can be and draw someone on the train without it just being really creepy,'' Kenny Pittock says. The artist’s 99 drawings of Melbourne train passengers have been a populist hit of ACCA’s NEW14: captioned with humorous textual asides, they’re a kindhearted take on the foibles of human nature. Facing the twin milestones of turning 26 this Sunday on the last day of the exhibition, Pittock has come up with an ambitious plan to spend Saturday travelling to the end of all 16 Melbourne train lines. Beginning in Belgrave at 4.20am he will be riding the rails until midnight, drawing the whole way and posting the results on Instagram and Twitter. ''I'm thinking I'll be giving the drawings away... it might be a nice thing to document it and give the drawings away in the process,'' he says.

GIVING A BIT OF LIP

Giving lip, talking back. Lip was the perfect title for a magazine on feminist artistic practice. Self-published in Melbourne from 1976 to 1984 by an all-women editorial group, the magazine is now the subject of an anthology edited by Vivian Ziherl. The book represents the first time Lip’s explorations of feminism, performance art and the ecology have been reproduced since the magazine folded. Lip co-founder Dr Janine Burke will chair a forum – at Margaret Lawrence Gallery this Wednesday from 5pm – with fellow co-founder and Lip editor Dr Suzanne Spunner Backflip: Feminism and Humour in Contemporary Art curator Laura Castagnini and artists Lyndal Jones and Lyndal Walker.
