West Wollongong's growing medical precinct is set to expand even further, with developers revealing plans for a nine-storey medical centre and apartment block.
According to documents lodged with Wollongong City Council, the mixed-use complex would be built on residential cul-de-sac Staff Street and require the demolition of two double-storey red brick homes.
The top six floors of the building would house 34 apartments, including seven one-bedroom flats and 27 two-bedroom residences.
There would also be two levels of parking providing a total of 40 car spaces, four motorcycle parks and 15 bicycle allotments. The medical centre would occupy the ground floor.
The centre would employ three practitioners and three support staff, opening from 8am to 7pm weekdays and 8am to noon on Saturdays.
Staff Street is zoned to allow "special activities" as part of the city's rapidly changing medical precinct.
Other new developments in the region's medical hub include the 149-bed Wollongong Private Hospital, and the $106 million public hospital expansion.
Both are due to be completed next year.
Contracts have also been awarded for Wollongong Hospital's $27.8 million car park expansion, which will provide more than 700 additional car spaces in a multi-storey facility next to the existing car park on New Dapto Road.
According to Vanovac Tuon Architects, who lodged the development application for the new Staff Street building, the medical centre complex would be "in the public interest" and fit in with the character of the area.
"The proposed development is of a high-quality contemporary architectural design which seeks to respond to existing character and desired future character of the area," the documents said.
The development application is exhibited on the council's website until June 12.
