Delays on Illawarra rail line, holiday traffic clears

A three car accident on the Princes Highway at Yallah has cleared, with roads south of Wollongong looking clear for holidaymakers.

The way has also cleared for residents heading north of Sydney, with no delays reported by Live Traffic NSW.

But commuters from Sydney heading home are facing "major delays" on the Illawarra and South Coast line, due to urgent track repairs at Hurstville.

Additionally, buses will replace the 7:19pm Bomaderry to Kiama train due to mechanical problems with the train.

Passengers are advised to allow additional travel time, listen to station announcements and check indicator boards.

On the roads, double demerit points apply until midnight on Monday, with police targeting speeding, alcohol and drugs, mobile phone use, fatigue and seatbelt use.

NSW Police Force Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn appealed for motorists to ensure no repeat of last June long-weekend, when six people died in crashes as well as cycling and pedestrian accidents.

‘‘Last year’s long weekend was a tragic time that saw not only fatal car crashes, but a pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist tragically killed, making it quite clear that road trauma does not discriminate,’’ she said.

‘‘Our message is to all motorists this long weekend: Speeding to get to a destination faster, inattention, fatigue, lack of seatbelts and drink or drug driving can have dangerous and tragic consequences.’’
