These are the words of advice Helen Volk, principal solicitor at Helen Volk Lawyers, shared with young female law students at the launch of a mentoring program on Thursday night.

The University of Wollongong's Lucy Mentoring Program pairs students with practising lawyers for three months to give them insights into their field.

Ms Volk said while there were still some "glass ceilings" in the profession for women, they could bring different skills to the job and needed to take advantage of any opportunities that arose.

Anne Mowbray, a partner at Verekers Lawyers, has been mentoring students since the program began and said many were keen to learn about maintaining a work-life balance.

"I always find it's worthwhile to encourage young women to get involved and think about what they might do in the future," Ms Mowbray said.

"When I started law it was pretty male-dominated, so it's nice to support these talented young women."

Fourth-year bachelor of law/bachelor of commerce student Jemma Witenden said she was interested in learning from an established female lawyer as she made decisions about her future.

"It's pretty easy for young women to be a bit intimidated by big professions like law, but they shouldn't be. There are so many great programs and people that are willing to give experience and advice."

The program began in 2004 as an initiative of the Office for Women in the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, and at UOW is run by Careers Central and the School of Law.
