A spokeswoman from Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) said work on the installation of the guard rail will start on Wednesday morning.

The 360-metre guard rail will be installed on the outside curve just west of the Lodden River Bridge, at the site of several fatalities.

The most recent fatality on the section of road occurred last week when 28-year-old Rene White died in a head-on crash.

It is also the same location where Illawarra Stingrays player Ashleigh Connor died after her car veered to the right and crashed into a tree on the opposite side of the road.

As well as several fatalities, it has also been the site of a number of crashes, according to an RMS road safety investigation released in March this year.

"In the five years to June 2013, there were 10 reported crashes at this location including six where motorists ran off the side of the road," an RMS spokeswoman said.

There are already new speed limit and warning signs, alignment markers and other safety enhancements, and the guard rail is being installed today and tomorrow.

Motorists are advised to drive to conditions as one southbound lane will be closed and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h will be in place during work.
