Illawarra Marine Rescue regional controller Bruce Mitchell said the alarm was raised at 6.30pm on Monday but strong winds and poor conditions meant the decision was made to leave the man on the island until Tuesday morning.
The Australian Federal Police rescued the man at 7am on Tuesday.
“The weather conditions at the time were just too bad for our boat to get in to get him off [the island],” Mr Mitchell said.
“The wind conditions were about 30 knots from the north west.
“The Federal Police then decided after a while to leave him on the island where he was safe and there was a hut where he could stay overnight.”
After being rescued, the man was taken to Murrays Beach boat ramp near Jervis Bay.
He was not injured.
