A dirty old doll could not compare to the beautiful new one Antonia’s character had to give a cousin. The performance involved jealousy, anger and trickery, with her character deciding in the end to gift wrap the dirty doll in place of the new one, and give that to the cousin instead.
Antonia’s parents Nick and Anna Kairis said the process of developing the performance was a big commitment.
‘‘She’s a real dedicated girl. At the age of 10 she was in six entries and learning A4 page scripts off by heart,’’ said Mrs Kairis.
‘‘It’s a process of memorisation, then building emotion and then creating movement.’’
Antonia’s brothers Christian and Adam also do speech and drama and Mrs Karis said performing was good for their confidence.
‘‘It’s worthwhile because it gives them a lifelong skill in being confident speaking with people and handling different types of dialogues and situations,’’ she said.
‘‘Being up on stage and knowing you can do your best work and not necessarily win means it’s just about growing.’’
Mr and Mrs Kairis said they were thankful for the volunteers running the eisteddfod.
‘‘If we didn’t have the eisteddfod, we would all have to travel to Sydney or Nowra and that can be hard,’’ Mrs Kairis said.
