The vibrant medley of cultures that makes the FIFA World Cup such a great spectacle inspired the theme for this year’s Illawarra Relay for Life.
The 2014 relay will be held at Beaton Park, Gwynneville, on September 20-21.
The theme for this year’s event is ‘‘Passport to Hope’’.
Cancer Council NSW’s major annual fund-raiser was officially launched on June 23.
Organisers are hoping relay participants will unleash all the passion, excitement and cultural pride of the World Cup, Sochi Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Indian dancers from Nachle Dance School in Wollongong, who will perform at the relay, were at the launch, as well as some young relay participants and 2014 ambassadors Leigh and Jennie Colacino.
Mrs Colacino has overcome cancer in her colon, liver, peritoneum and lungs, undergoing 22 surgical procedures since she was diagnosed in 2004.
The Stanwell Park resident credits a ‘‘positive attitude, supportive husband and family, and brilliant surgeon’’ for helping her survive cancer.
Now she and her husband, Leigh, want to offer hope to others.
Illawarra Relay for Life Committee chairwoman Maree Kerr said this year’s theme of countries and culture was relevant because cancer doesn’t discriminate and every nation was affected by it.
Ms Kerr said that some of the relay funds will go towards global research but most of the funds raised from the Illawarra relay remained locally.
Ninety teams and 389 people have already registered for the 24-hour relay.
