According to a Lowy Institute poll, 71per cent of Australians believe that the government should turn back the boats when safe to do so.
This is Abbott’s ace card, the card he will play prior to the next election, the problem is, it is his only trump; admittedly the best in a suit of 13 but Abbott will need the other players to throw their hands in for the government to win the game.
