Minister for the Illawarra John Ajaka visited the region on Friday to announce the start of the tender process for the $15.5 million refurbishment.
The courthouse shut its doors on Friday, allowing prospective tenderers to inspect the building and minor work to start to prepare the site for the revamp.
Plans for the refurbishment include creating an additional courtroom, to be used to manage criminal and civil matters and conduct tribunal hearings.
Two local courtrooms will also be upgraded while a new private entrance will be created for juries and protected witnesses.
Other improvements include a new registry, additional interview rooms and new jury deliberation rooms.
There will also be upgrades to courtroom technology.
Mr Ajaka said the renovation, funded by the state government, would give the courthouse a "new lease of life" and improve facilities.
Police will still be able to apply for search warrants and AVOs from any court registry in the Illawarra or a temporary registry at Suite 3, 43 Burelli Street, in Wollongong.
