The competition allows professional and amateur photographers to team up with people in the hairdressing industry in a fun and quirky way.
It is part of the Highlights for Hope campaign to raise funds and awareness for the Light and Hope Illawarra Mental Health Clubhouse.
The judges are looking for creative, edgy, arty photography that highlights hairdressers and hairstyles.
The founder and co-ordinator of the campaign, Robyn Te Velde, is passionate about the cause.
"We are looking for photos that capture the fun personalities of hairdressers and the warm, generous and wonderful hairdressing industry," Mrs Te Velde said.
The winner will receive a $2000 cash prize, second place $500 and third place $300, with the winners of the People's Choice Award and the Mercury Website Gallery Viewers' Choice Award both receiving $500.
Entry forms must be entered by the photographer on the Highlights for Hope website.
There is no limit to the number of entries photographers may submit, at a fee of $25 each.
The Illawarra Mercury will feature the photographs throughout the competition and a pop-up exhibition will showcase the finalists' work in Wollongong Central.
The winners will be announced at the Highlights for Hope Hairdressers' Ball on October 11, 2014.
Entries close on August 26.
Entry forms, terms and conditions and more details are available on the Highlights for Hope website, highlightsforhope.org.au.
