Council staff have recommended eight business and community members be appointed to the board for two years.
These include Port Kembla Port Corporation boss Dom Figliomeni, University of Wollongong representative Melva Crouch, Illawarra Business Chamber chief executive officer Debra Murphy, Property Council chair David Laing, Australian Industry Group's Leanne Grogan and Destination Wollongong's Mark Sleigh.
Two community members - transport, logistics and infrastructure expert Louise Meyrick and manufacturing, logistics and social assistance sector expert Peter Robertson - have also been recommended for appointment.
The advisory group is responsible for trying to attract business to Wollongong, lobbying the government for investment in the region and preparing strategic growth plans for the city's economy.
When it was first established in 2012, some councillors raised concerns the board was made up of "the same old faces".
Cr George Takacs said it needed more "lateral thinkers".
Councillors Gordon Bradbery, Michelle Blicavs, Ann Martin, Leigh Colacino and Greg Petty are also on the board.
Its first meeting will be August 4.
