Radar Illawarra: the week's music news

BRUCE

BRUCE

■ Jenny Broke The Window premiered new single ‘We Could’ve Done This Grant’ on Triple J last week. Fun, light, airy and bouncy, the upbeat keys-driven number is the first new taste from the band since their popular debut EP. JBTW have recently been recording with producer Tony Buchen (The Preatures, Megan Washington, Loon Lake, Bluejuice) so no doubt we’ll be hearing more new stuff soon.

■ Rock and rollers BRUCE have shared their new EP, creatively titled ‘BRUCE! THE EP.’ You can hear all four new songs, and download the whole thing, at their Bandcamp page

■ In recent weeks, Anita’s Theatre in Thirroul have had their first big gigs since new owners have taken over the place –sold-out shows from Chet Faker, then Tiny Ruins and Shining Bird, in back-to-back weeks bode well for the northern suburbs venue. More big gigs will be running through the place soon, including King Buzzo (The Melvins) on August 22. Keep an eye out!

■ Great lineup at Rad on July 16 – a night of beats and electronics from Reactionary, Jaguarandi, Midnight Karaoke and more. If you’re looking for new local music, you could do worse than Google some of those names. Some seriously impressive electronic music from Illawarra producers helping Wollongong shed its tag as a town just for rock and punk.

■ Local reggae champions Chuparosa are turning one this month, and are celebrating their first birthday with a whole day of fun on July 26. During the day they’re throwing a free BBQ in a park with live music, and later that night they’ll headline Rad (with Atticus and Heavyset Dub supporting) for a onesie party.

■ The Illawarra community was shocked after newly arrived Eritrean refugee Tumezghi Tesfay was bashed at a Wollongong train station. The Rock For Refugees, set for Waves Nightclub on August 30, aims to raise money for Mr Tesfay to have dental work to replace teeth he lost in the attack. The concert is looking for bands to play – email longhoundstudio@hotmail.com or visit the Rock For Refugees Facebook page for more info.

■ The Urbanstar Talent Quest is coming to City Diggers on July 18. Singers, MCs, vocal groups, acoustic duos, beat boxers and dancers are encouraged to enter the contest, with cash and prizes up for grabs. Email urbanstaraustralia@gmail.com to register

■ Kingswood will play Waves on September 20; Art vs Science play the Unibar on August 14; and the Original LP Band Comp continues on with the last round of heats at the Woonona Bulli RSL on Thursday night.
