The 38-year-old retired from Australian first class cricket in 2012 but continued to play with English county sides Hampshire (2012) and Lancashire (2013).

He also continued to play Twenty20 cricket with the Perth Scorchers and led the side to the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash League title earlier this year.

The proud West Aussie led the title assault from the front making 314 runs from his 10 innings with a highest score of 75.

According to a statement from the Perth Scorchers, Katich's retirement is effective immediately and he will not be joining the team at this year's Champions League Tournament.

Katich switched sports last year by taking up a position as player development co-ordinator with AFL club GWS.

Quoted on the Perth Scorchers website, Katich said: "It's always difficult when it comes to making these sort of decisions.  I've obviously been in a similar situation when I made the decision to retire from First Class cricket in Australia a few years ago.

"I have a young family, I've had a great run and for my last game at the WACA, my home ground, to have a win in a successful campaign; it's the stuff you dream of."

Katich began his cricket with the Midland-Guildford Cricket Club playing his first season of First Grade as a 16-year-old in 1992-93.

He finishes with 56 tests and 4188 runs at the highest level. He also played in 45 one day internationals, with a further 1325 runs adding to his achievements.

Katich's former WA and Test teammate Justin Langer became his coach at the Scorchers.

"Simon's contribution to Western Australian and Australian cricket has been immense and whilst I'm disappointed he'll no longer play for the Scorchers I respect his decision to move on," Langer said.

"I am glad he was able to retire on a high and where he started his illustrious career - here at the WACA."
