Mills and San Antonio Spurs teammate Aron Baynes gatecrashed a live cross from Fox Sports News correspondent Julian de Stoop on Wednesday morning in Melbourne outside the headquarters of AFL club Collingwood.
De Stoop believed the pair were a couple of rowdy Magpies supporters as Mills and Baynes, carrying the Larry O'Brien trophy they have dubbed 'Lazza', made an impromptu appearance.
"Get off boys, get off,'' De Stoop said.
De Stoop accidentally pushed the injured shoulder of Mills, who had surgery after the NBA finals and will be sidelined for the next six months.
"I'm highly embarrassed about that, I'll have to apologise to (Mills) down the track,'' De Stoop said.
"I had no idea it was him.
"I just thought it was a couple of Collingwood nuffies.''
Baynes continued the banter on social media, getting in touch with Fox Sports News and de Stoop on Twitter.

Mills is in fact a lifelong fan of the Adelaide Crows, and will be given a lap of honour at Adelaide Oval before their game against the West Coast Eagles on August 2.
The Canberra product played a key role in the Spurs winning the NBA title, and signed a new three-year contract worth $12 million to stay in San Antonio.
Mills and Baynes have been busy with media commitments on Wednesday morning, stopping in on Boomers great Andrew Gaze and his radio show on SEN.
The pair are in Melbourne as part of the world tour of the Larry O'Brien trophy after the Spurs' victory in the NBA finals against the Miami Heat.
 
They will head to Sydney on Thursday before stopping in on Canberra on Friday.
Mills will also receive the keys to the city when he returns home to the national capital.
The tour then continues to Brisbane, Baynes' home town of Cairns and up to Thursday Island as part of Mills' Torres Strait heritage.
