The story of the Dapto Girl Guides hall is like the story of the three little pigs.
Their first hall was built in 1949, the same year the Dapto group began, but it blew down soon after.
Another hall was built in Western Avenue, Dapto, but it too was soon destroyed – this time by fire.
Dapto Guides district manager Gai Hemley said after the second building was destroyed, they decided the new building at Emerson Road should be made of brick, but the cost was substantially more than they could afford.
‘‘Thankfully the community really got behind us,’’ Ms Hemley said.
‘‘Local businesses donated or sold us the materials at discounted prices, while much of the construction was done by volunteers. So to us, it isn’t just a building, it’s a reminder of how much can be accomplished by a caring community.’’
Dapto Girl Guides will be holding an open day on Sunday, July 20, from 10am to 3pm, to celebrate the hall’s 30th birthday.
It will include lots of fun activities, including a cake-cutting ceremony.
Mrs Hemley encouraged all past, present and future girls, leaders, parents and committee members, as well as the public to attend. ‘‘I hope everyone who has been associated with the Guides, or is thinking about joining, comes down to join in the celebrations.
‘‘It should be a fantastic day.’’
