Fairy Meadow man charged following alleged rampage

A Fairy Meadow man was under police guard in hospital on Friday after an alleged cross-town crime spree on Thursday afternoon.

Wollongong police said the 25-year-old man began his afternoon by stealing a Ford Laser sedan from a University of Wollongong car park on Squires Way, Fairy Meadow, around 3.30pm.

The man is then accused of failing to stop after a collision with a taxi on Elliotts Road at 3.45pm. The occupants were unhurt.

About 4pm, police located the vehicle in a Fernhill driveway with the motor still running.

Inspector Dan Richardson of Wollongong police said the man had then tried to steal another motor vehicle from a home, but was disturbed by the home owner.

"Police patrolling the area with the assistance of the dog squad were informed the man had then stolen a pushbike from nearby," Insp Richardson said.

Shortly after, residents in Douglas Street, Tarrawanna, spotted the man leaping backyard fences.

He was finally caught in Pringle Road, Fernhill, about 4.15pm.

Insp Richardson said the man sustained a finger injury.

The man is likely to face court on Saturday on five charges including intimidation, larceny, and drive while disqualified.
