The suburb has been added to the "build preparation" category on the NBN Co website.
Contractors are beginning pre-construction activities in the area, preparing Telstra pits and pipes for use by NBN Co.
Mangerton joins suburbs such as Gwynneville, North Wollongong, Corrimal, Bellambi and Horsley on the first stage of connection to the NBN.
In "build commenced" suburbs such as Woonona, East Corrimal, Wollongong CBD, Coniston, Dapto and Penrose, NBN Co contractors are laying cable.
"Build preparation and construction are currently under way to build the NBN for around 39,000 homes and businesses in parts of the Illawarra region," an NBN Co spokesman said.
He said more than 11,000 homes and businesses in the Illawarra had already been connected to the NBN.
It usually takes about 12 months from the start of construction until residents can begin receiving NBN services from phone and internet providers.
There are, however, large sections of the Illawarra still waiting for preparatory work to begin.
