The trial is being undertaken by the Centre for Road Safety and, according to general manager Marg Prendergast, aims to find a way to protect motorcyclists who come off their bikes.
"Motorcycling is growing in popularity and we want to improve safety for these riders who are among our most vulnerable road users," Ms Prendergast said.
"The NSW government is always actively looking for opportunities to improve safety for motorcyclists."
The new barrier is similar to a normal guard rail, but with a second layer placed closer to ground level, to cover up the rail posts.
The new barriers have been installed at Moss Vale Road, Lawrence Hargrave Drive, Illawarra Highway and Kings Highway.
"These sites were chosen based on a history of crashes," she said.
