Wollongong City Council donated trees and plants to eight schools in the region to allow them to take part. At Austinmer 100 plants, including gymea lilies, blue flax lilies, waratahs and an Illawarra flame tree were eased carefully into the ground by students eager to green their thumbs.
On Sunday, Wollongong council is holding tree-planting events at Greenhouse Park in Wollongong, Nyrang Park in Keiraville, Cringila Park and Bellambi Creek.
