The home at 18-20 Norman Street was built by steelworks engineer Cecil Francis and has historical and cultural importance, being listed in Robert Irving's Twentieth Century Architecture in Wollongong.
Irving described the house in his book as splendid and said the design "not only exploits the steep site but also takes calculated account of solar angles so that projections shade the interior against the hot summer sun yet allow maximum penetration of winter sunlight when the sun has a lower trajectory".
The house which is called Orana, an Aboriginal word for welcome, has been owned by Jim and Cynthia Piper for the past 28 years.
The sale of the house is being carried out by Belle Property Wollongong principals Darren Kay and Nicole Kay.
Mr Kay said the property was a grand family residence with decorative cornices, high ceilings, ample storage and an open brick fireplace.
"It's tucked away in a private cul-de-sac setting and provides a breathtaking outlook with stunning views that stretch across picturesque grounds to the escarpment," he said.
"Large glass windows take full advantage of the northerly aspect, flooding the interiors with an abundance of sunshine."
The house has an open plan living room, which opens out to the formal dining area and a generous kitchen and meals area, all of which have access to the terrace.
There are built-in robes to the north-facing bedrooms plus an
en suite to the main. Separate self-contained accommodation includes a kitchen, dining area and bathroom.
Orana is in the same street as 2 Norman Street, which sold for the record price of $3.6 million, the highest price recorded for a single dwelling non-waterfront property in the Illawarra.
18-20 Norman Street is open for inspection on Saturday from midday to 12.45pm. It will go to auction on Friday, August 29, at 6pm at the Belle Auction Room in Wollongong's Chifley Hotel.
