Illawarra principals, teachers and politicians gathered at the NSW Teachers Federation regional headquarters on Monday afternoon to launch the week's Gonski events.
The union is campaigning for the Coalition to commit to the full six years of the Gonski agreement. The government scrapped the final two years of the scheme, instead funding the first four years only, with funds indexed to inflation from 2018.
NSW Teachers Federation regional organiser Nicole Calnan said the money schools had received under the scheme so far had already benefited schools and students.
David Lamb, regional president of the NSW Primary Principals' Association, and Belinda Wall, Illawarra president of the NSW Secondary Principals' Council, also addressed the gathering.
Mrs Wall said it was important to realise Gonski was not just about funding but about education reform.
"We're talking about providing a world-class education for all our students, regardless of who their parents are, where they live, what religion they practise, what colour their skin is," she said.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Education Week. Schools will celebrate both awareness weeks with events such as open days, parent and grandparent lunches and assemblies.
