A 25-year-old man was working at a video shop on King Street when another man entered the store brandishing a knife at 3.30pm, police said.
He demanded cash and was given money from the register before running away towards Todd Street.
No one was injured.
Police are searching for a man described as being of Caucasian appearance, unshaven, in his 20s, with a thin to medium build and between 175 centimetres and 183 centimetres tall.
