More than 1500 students from the Kiama area's five public schools descended on Hindmarsh Park on a warm winter's Thursday for the Celebrating Public Education in the Park event.
The Education Week event was dedicated to Carol and Michael Clancy, the former Illawarra teachers who were on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was shot down over Ukraine with the loss of all 298 people on board.
Minnamurra Public School principal Warren Grosse said the event provided a way to display to parents and the community the many elements that were associated with attending a public school.
"It is a day of celebration, a fun day in a picnic-like atmosphere," Mr Grosse said.
Students from Kiama High School, Kiama Public School, Gerringong Public School, Jamberoo Public School and Minnamurra Public School took part.
"The Kiama Learning Community of Schools boasts highly successful results that are above the national average consistently," Mr Grosse said.
"It's not often that we can all meet as a whole community of schools and you don't often see such a mass of students and colour in Hindmarsh Park."
Thursday's event was the second time the event had been held in Kiama, with the celebration now an annual event.
