If the success of One Direction is anything to go by, the future looks bright for Balgownie performer Tahnie Cristini.

Ms Cristini, 19, has been wowing audiences nationwide on TV talent quest The X Factor.

After auditioning for the show, she was placed in a group with three other female performers to make the group Girl Band - a similar origin story to One Direction, with the five members of the British boy band placed together after initially auditioning solo on the UK version of The X Factor.

"I had no idea what to expect from the girls I was put with, but now I couldn't imagine doing it without them," Ms Cristini said.

"I'm really happy they put us together. We're all around the same age and even though we look and sound different, we really work well together."

Girl Band is into the competition's advanced stages, named among the final 12 of The X Factor.

Ms Cristini said she had high hopes for the group even after the show, but her success is far from an overnight story.

"I've been performing my whole life, since I was three or four," she said.

"I finally decided I had the confidence to do this."

She calls the process "gruelling" but also "the best year of my life".

"It has been an amazing experience, and something not a lot of people get to do," Ms Cristini said.

She performs on The X Factor on Sunday night.
