Wollongong City Council is conducting a "perceptions of safety survey" to find out how safe residents, workers and students feel in different areas throughout the council area.

Residents can complete the survey online through the council's website, or attend one of several community kiosks which will be held throughout the region between now and the end of September.

Respondents are asked whether they feel "completely safe", "mostly safe", "a little unsafe" or "completely unsafe" during their daily commute, in their local shopping area, at parks and reserves, on public transport and in the Wollongong CBD.

They are also asked to list specific crime issues and what changes they would make to increase safety in their home suburb and the city centre.

Council media liaison officer Lachlan Harris said the information gathered would help the council make decisions about its evening economy and cultural plans.

It would enable "a cohesive approach to planning and improving safety in our community", he said.

A report of the survey results would be provided to the community in February.
