The call comes from the Corrimal Revitalisation Action Group - a combined effort of the suburb's chamber of commerce, neighbourhood forum and Kurrimul Bushcare.
The first focus is to clean up the waterway that runs through Corrimal, which chamber of commerce president Paul Boultwood said was clogged with weeds and rubbish, and smelt.
"We've got Spring into Corrimal coming and we'll have up to 50,000 people coming here to have a look at the area," Mr Boultwood said.
"If they see a whole bunch of rubbish in the creek it'll be a bad look for Corrimal. What we want to do is try and make it so it's a completely clean flow to the ocean."
Mr Boultwood said it was about Corrimal residents cleaning up their own neighbourhood, rather than waiting for Wollongong City Council to do it.
"We're not sitting on our hands, we're getting together and saying, 'We can do this, we don't have to wait for council to tell us to go and do it'," he said.
"They've got a lot of other things they have to do.
"So we'll actually do a little and that's helping them to help us as well."
Volunteers can help with the clean-up effort on Saturday, August 23, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, with people meeting at Memorial Park, Princes Highway, Corrimal.
Volunteers need to wear sturdy footwear, long pants, gloves and a hat and to bring bottled water and sunscreen.
On the following Saturday, tree planting and mulching will take place along the creek bank from 9.30am.
