The legendary musician - who is in Melbourne for four concerts starting Monday night at the Palais - has penned songs about about baseballer Catfish Hunter and boxers Hurricane Carter and Davey Moore, but one look at his ‘Revisionist Art’ series gives you a sense that he’s still got a bit more to say about sport.

Dylan’s most recent foray into the art world is a series of silkscreen on canvas prints that parody old magazines, with one in particular Sports Illustrated - Female 3rd Base Coach (2014) seeing him reinvent the famous masthead with his own sporting headlines.

The work features all the usual Dylan shenanigans, but being a family newspaper Pssst is unable to display the cover in its entirety. Suffice to say the picture for the lead story “Yankees hire first ever female 3rd base coach!” certainly makes its point about the way women have often been portrayed in the sporting media.

In the aftermath of a controversial week in which Essendon and ASADA went to court, perhaps the most intriguing of Dylan’s concocted headlines is the one that reads ‘Steroid hoax baffles government investigators’.

Like his various incarnations in music, it seems his Bobness is once again ahead of the curve. Then again, given the shrill recent stirrings in some media outlets it may be he is also just playing catch-up – albeit with greater helpings of wit.

When the Revisionist Art collection was first launched at New York’s Gagosian gallery in 2012, critic Luc Sante said in the exhibition catalogue that Dylan’s magazine covers seemed to emanate “from a world slightly removed from ours – a world a bit more honest about its corruption, its chronic horniness, its sweat, its body odour”.

Sante added that the work “challenges the viewer to re-evaluate their thinking in a media–saturated society, where covers of magazines are often taken at their word, without being questioned by the reader”.

All interesting concepts that seem to apply equally to mainstream media and the rantings on footy fan forums.

Dylan himself has offered the odd bit of sports opinion and expressed this view in a 2006 issue of Rolling Stone when asked about his favourite baseball team. “The problem with baseball teams is all the players get traded, and what your favorite team used to be – a couple of guys you really liked on the team, they’re not on the team now – and you can’t possibly make that team your favourite team.’’

Alas Bob has expressed to Pssst no fondness for AFL, or any club in particular, although urban myth in Collingwood has long attested to sightings of a familiar figure wandering lost on Smith Street wearing a Magpie beanie and searching for a second-hand record shop.

So as a nod to the Revisionist Art project here’s our own Sunday Sport special edition cover to mark Dylan’s brief footy-season stay in Melbourne. The difference? His costs $3000 online and you can download ours for free.

All of which has Pssst recalling the words of another Dylan acolyte, Bruce Springsteen. Performing at a 1996 Woody Guthrie tribute concert The Boss recalled his reaction when coming across the great folk singer’s beloved children’s song Riding in my car, saying: ‘‘Hmmm, automobiles. No disrespect Mr Guthrie, but that’s my business.’’

In that spirit. No disrespect Mr Dylan, but sports covers ... well, the times may be a changing, but it’s still a job for experts.
