In a submission to the board, Ms Watson said Transport NSW's proposed station name of Shellharbour Junction "implies that the new station is at a cross-section of transport modes".
"If this is the intention, then the new station has, in my view, been inappropriately described," Ms Watson said.
"The new station will be located 400 metres from the existing Dunmore station which will be decommissioned once the new station is finished.
"It is located on the straight rail line of the South Coast Line."
Ms Watson said the new station should simply retain the existing name and would save the state government needing to amend existing timetables and ticketing arrangements.
"In my consultations with the local community in my electorate, the strong preference remains to continue with the existing name for the new station," Ms Watson said.
"In my opinion, the controversy involving what to officially name the new station could have been avoided entirely had the state government taken the local Shellharbour City community into its confidence and involved local residents in the naming process."
The $39 million station is due to be opened by the end of the year.
Previously suggested names Flinders and Shell Cove were both ruled out because the station was not within the boundaries of either and will still be in Dunmore.
