The bike was travelling on Parkes Street when it hit a ute travelling about 45kmh along Moore Street, and became airborn.
Both boys lost consciousness in the crash.
One flew into the windscreen of the oncoming car, shattering the glass.
The car’s occupants - a man and two children - were shaken up but uninjured.
The other boy landed on the road.
The Mercury understands neither teen was wearing a helmet or protective riding gear.
The 15-year-old boy suffered the most serious injuries, including a compound fracture to his left femur, and multiple abrasions. He was transported to the helicopter base at Albion Park and airlifted to Westmead Children’s Hospital.
The 16-year-old boy was transported by ambulance to Wollongong Hospital with multiple cuts and abrasions.
Ambulance NSW Illawarra duty operations manager Inspector Norm Rees said the boys faced a long and painful recovery.
‘‘Both riders, although their injuries are significant, have been very lucky.’’
