Police are calling for witnesses to an asault at Shellharbour on Saturday morning

Lake Illawarra Police are calling on the public to help with inquiries into an assault in Shellharbour in the early hours of Saturday morning.

At about 12.50am on Saturday police were called to Mary St, Shellharbour.

Police alleged that two men, aged 53 and a 25 were assaulted after they intervened in what appeared to be another assault taking place.

The two victims have approached a group of two males and a female who were allegedly fighting on the street when they were assaulted.

The two men were taken to Shellharbour Hospital with minor injuries.

Two men aged 22 and 23 were arrested by police at the scene and charged with affray, and granted conditional bail to appear at Port Kembla Local Court on September 24.
