Illawarra business leaders have been mentoring TAFE Illawarra events management students organising the annual corporate golf day in recent weeks.
For the second year in a row, the event is being held at The Links Shell Cove because of feedback from committee members such as IMB Better Value Banking's Terry Widdicombe and Novotel Wollongong Northbeach's Walter Immoos.
The two men are both avid golfers and told them they would get more interest if everyone playing had access to a golf cart.
And it worked because three weeks out from the event on September 5, they already had more than 90 players. That means this year's golf day will already be the biggest yet.
TAFE Illawarra's event management students, such as sponsorship co-ordinator Lauren Glennon, said it was great to have experienced and knowledgeable people as a sounding board.
She said the advice and feedback gave everyone the opportunity to learn what it took to run a first-class event.
"It is really good to work with them," she said. "They have helped me by letting me know who to contact. We have had about four committee meetings. I have learned a lot because when we give them ideas, they tell us how to go about them."
The students have formed a company called [event]ure and are in the final stages of co-ordinating the sixth Annual Corporate Golf Day that is giving them invaluable practical experience, helping them become work-ready.
The charity event is always a collaborative initiative between TAFE Illawarra teaching staff, students and local industry.
The industry committee includes many representatives from the business community who generously take time out of their busy working schedules to attend a monthly meeting. The committee provides many other supportive approaches such as a 24-hour line of communication.
Other representatives are Kimberley Humphries, of the University of Wollongong Faculty of Business, Neil Webster, of the UniCentre and the Santa Claus Pub Crawl, Jeremy Wilshire, of Destination Wollongong, Kylie-Ann Haynes, of Bluejuice Events, Delyse Del Turco, of Better Business Accounting, and Stefanie Ryan, of PeopleCare.
Mrs Ryan is a marketing team manager and said it was her second year on the committee.
