For the 24-year-old, it will be one of only a few rare opportunities that he gets to visit his son Jaxon, who lives in Brisbane with ex-girlfriend Amanda Palmer.

It's the softer side to the man with the tough guy exterior.

Jaxon is the reason why Dugan agreed to join the Broncos after he was sacked by Canberra, before a tirade on social media cost him a multimillion-dollar contract at the Queensland club and the chance to live close to his child.

After Origin III, Dugan stayed back to visit his now 13-month-old son, and has been working closely with the mother of his child to sort out their differences in a bid to improve his relationship with his child.

While Dugan preferred to keep the details of his arrangement with Ms Palmer private, he admitted this week's trip to Brisbane would offer an opportunity to be able to see his son a lot more in the future.

"My son's up there, so I'm hoping to see him," Dugan said.

"I've worked out to be able to do it. It's been in the works for a while. We're going through the motions of getting that sorted out."

Dugan admitted his interest in linking with the Broncos over St George Illawarra after he was given the punt from the Raiders was both for family and football reasons.

While his abuse of a Raiders fan on social media has denied him the chance to be closer to his son, Dugan insists he has no regrets over the ordeal as he prepares to take on the team he almost joined midway through last year.

"At the time I saw it as the best fit for me for my personal life and footy career," Dugan said of his potential move to the Broncos.

"I had a meeting with Andrew Gee and Anthony Griffin and I sat down with them to talk about the culture and their expectations. At that time it was a good fit for me both on and off the field. Things didn't work out that way and I'm down here at the Dragons, but I wouldn't change it for anything because this is my home now.

"Whatever happened back then, they had a duty of care to take care of their club and their image. I understand it was a stuff-up from my behalf and I paid the price. I wouldn't change anything, all I was doing was sticking up for my family. Whether that's right or wrong in anyone's eyes, that's what I saw as right at the time. You live and you learn. I'm a big believer in things happening for a reason. I've found a home here and I wouldn't change it for anything."

Dugan returned to Canberra a fortnight ago for a clash against the Raiders for the first time since he was punted from the club midway through last season.

While he doesn't expect to cop the same abuse from the Broncos fans as he did from the Raiders fans, he insists there are still some Canberra fans who support him.

"I don't think it's really worried me too much or it's worried them too much. The Broncos thing happened a long time ago now," Dugan said.

"At the start I copped a little bit but I think everyone has moved on from it now. Even a few weeks ago in Canberra, I still had a lot of Raiders fans come up to me and say 'we still love you and we miss you here'. There's no hard feeling anywhere for me and I think everyone's moving on as well.

"But in saying that, I did enjoy it in Canberra. I was copping the usual sort of jokes about the cruisers and that sort of thing, but that's just water off a duck's back for me now. I've moved on and in a better place. I was just geeing them up a bit and a lot of the Dragons fans up there loved it as well."
