The Illawarra Academy of Sport athletes from the Wingecarribee local government area will receive special recognition when Wingecarribee Shire Council hosts a mayoral reception in their honour.
The Mayor of Wingecarribee, Juliet Arkwright, will formally congratulate 10 athletes on becoming academy scholarship holders at a function at the Wingecarribee Council Chambers on Thursday.
The Academy's acting general manager, Shannon Fraser, said the IAS was proud of its close ties to local government, and would not exist without the support of the Wingecarribee Shire Council, along with the Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven and Wollongong councils.
"The support of our local councils helps us give athletes the best possible opportunities on their pathway to excellence, so they can compete at the highest level while giving back to their communities," he said.
"Our programs focus not only on skills training, but also on broader life skills that help develop young athletes into well-rounded citizens and role models for other young people."
