Australian theatre royalty graced the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre stage on Tuesday as Nancye Hayes starred in the opening night of the State Theatre Company of South Australia's production The Importance Of Being Earnest.

Assistant director Yasmin Gurreeboo praised the seven-strong cast as the best she had worked with, but Ms Hayes was singled out for particular plaudits.
"She is so wonderful and the ultimate professional. So down to earth and stunning to work with," Ms Gurreeboo said.
It is the latest interpretation of Oscar Wilde's 1895 classic. Ms Gurreeboo said despite the passing years, the play still retained its relevance and social currency.
"People can still connect to the pursuit of love, the themes of class," she said.
Wollongong is the last stop for the production's national tour, after playing to packed houses Australia-wide.
Ms Gurreeboo said it was one of the most successful runs the company had staged.
The Importance Of Being Earnest runs until September 6 at the IPAC.
