Competition was fierce between students from Warrawong High and Cedars Christian College as they battled it out for a place in the challenge’s state finals.
Three teams from Warrawong and one from Cedars made it through to the next round, which will be held in Nepean in November.
The program, held for the first time in the Illawarra this year, is a worldwide initiative aimed at giving budding engineers a chance to try out their skills as race car manufacturers.
Students had to design, build and race their own mini Formula One race cars, while picking up skills in physics, aerodynamics and manufacturing.
Warrawong High School TAS, art and music head teacher Steve Delaney said students had embraced the challenge and the chance to take ownership of their projects.
‘‘The change in the work ethic of some of these kids has been amazing,’’ he said.
‘‘I get to work just after 6am and I have students sitting there waiting to work; it’s the same on lunch breaks and after school, they’ve really put everything into it.’’
Students from Figtree High School and Edmund Rice College also took part in the challenge.
Mr Delaney is hopeful more schools will participate in next year’s event.
