For Woonona woman Mimi Lennon, who is mum to two-year-old Nina, there's nothing quite like diving into the ocean with a bodyboard.
So when she moved to the Illawarra with her family a year ago it didn't take her long to join the Wollongong Surfing Mums playgroup.
Despite the name, dads are also welcome to join the group, which meets every Friday from 9.30am to noon.
Parents take turns to hit the waves, generally in pairs, while other members keep a close eye on the kids.
Mrs Lennon said a lot of the parents were new to the Illawarra and had found the group a great way to meet like-minded friends.
"I've been to a lot of mums' groups but it's hard to make close friends when you've only got your kids in common, it's a lot easier when you've got another medium to connect with, like surfing or another activity, it brings you a lot closer to the other mums I think," she said.
Those interested in joining are urged to contact the Wollongong Surfing Mums page on Facebook.
"Anyone can join, there are mums who don't even get in the water, the more the merrier," Mrs Lennon said.
"Anyone who wants to make new friends and enjoys an active, healthy lifestyle would gain a lot from this group."
