Nearly four million Australians over 25 have high blood pressure according to the National Stroke Foundation, but many do not know their blood pressure numbers.

The Wollongong event, which involved setting up blood pressure check stations in the mall, is one of thousands being held across the country during the awareness week which runs until Sunday.

Wollongong Deputy Lord Mayor Chris Connor took time out from his civic duties to complete the check, which took just a few minutes.

For those who missed the event, free blood pressure checks are available at a number of pharmacies across the region for the next few months.

‘‘I think it’s vital for people, particularly those in high risk categories, to make sure they get regular check-ups,’’ Cr Connor said.

‘‘Every 10 minutes in Australia someone has a stroke and it is the second greatest cause of death and disability.

‘‘It takes a toll on us as a nation but it’s something that we don’t talk much about so it’s time that its profile is lifted and that more people are encouraged to get checks.’’

Cr Connor said it was also important to be aware of the signs of stroke, in order to act fast to help others.

‘‘If a friend or family member’s mouth has drooped, if their speech is slurred, if they cannot lift one arm, then call triple-0 immediately,’’ he said.

National Stroke Foundation NSW executive officer Greg Cantwell said the theme of this year’s awareness week was Challenge Stroke.

‘‘Communities are coming together to take action to reduce their stroke risk, learn more about stroke and help raise stroke awareness,’’ he said.

‘‘Stroke touches all of our lives in some way, whether it is personally, through a family member, a friend or colleague.

‘‘...However many strokes can be prevented. We can come together and take action to stop stroke and challenge its impact.’’

Mr Cantwell said lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol could drastically reduce a person’s risk of stroke.
