The northern Illawarra bowling club closed its doors at the end of last year but a visit by Towradgi player Robyn Walker to East Timor ensured bowls gear found a good home in the East Timor community.
The trip to East Timor included visits to several villages, orphanages, and clinics including Lacluta, a mountainous region about 70 kilometres from the capital Dili.
Basic facilities there are a world away from Wollongong but the community are friendly and generous and were very happy to receive the Bulli Women's Bowling Club shirts and other gear from Illawarra clubs.
The bowls shirts will now be used for a soccer team.
Bulli Women's Bowling Club was formed in 1955 and was among eight founding clubs of the South Coast District Women's Bowling Association.
A host of other bowling clubs including Corrimal, Kiama, Oak Flats, Shellharbour and Towradgi Park also joined Bulli in lending assistance with caps and clothes which are greatly appreciated in East Timor.
Warilla on the rise
Warilla are close to sealing a top six finals place in the NSW Champions League following victories over Taren Point and Merrylands in their home double-header last Saturday.
The Gorillas are comfortably in the top four.
Reigning NSW No1 pennant champions Taren Point are also the defending Champions League champions, while Merrylands were leading the competition before running into a white-hot Warilla.
The Gorillas have three matches remaining before the semi-finals on Saturday September 27 at Mt Lewis Bowling Club.
Warilla have this weekend off before away games against The Hills Hornets and Mt Lewis Lions on September 21.
All teams then play their final round on the morning of September 27, before the top six finals begin that afternoon.
The Champions League is a team-based competition featuring 12 sides.
Each team features three sides of four, playing two nine-end sets.
Finally, in other Illawarra club news, Dapto and Dapto Citizens bowling clubs are hosting major events this weekend.
On Saturday and Sunday Dapto are running the 30th year of their Flyaway Triples, with $5500 prizemoney.
Across town on Sunday, Dapto Citizens have their popular Father and Son event.
The prizemoney is $1200, with the format three games of 10 ends.
